Where Music Moves

​Visual Tone Poems are cinematic dance films that bring my songs into motion through free-form contemporary dance, spontaneous and improvisational movement, pedestrian gesture, theatrical expression, nature, visual poetry, and beauty in the everyday.​​ Rather than simply illustrating a song, I explore what happens when music moves through the body, the landscape, the camera, the image, and the edit — becoming something not only heard, but seen, felt, and embodied. ​Through the editing process, the film begins to reveal itself, and it is here that I create the choreography for each piece. Like painting with movement, rhythm, and time, or assembling a puzzle, I layer images, gestures, and moments until the music finds its visual form. ​ Sometimes, I feel like Michelangelo, chiseling away at the marble to reveal David,  knowing he is already in there and I simply have to uncover what is waiting to emerge. Cinematic editing has become a beloved part of my creative process, another way for me to make music move. Filmed within the ever-changing theatre of creation and the familiar spaces around us, I seek to celebrate moments of simplicity and beauty while also delighting in the unexpected and taking risks through self expression. ​I draw inspiration not only from the song itself, but from the environment in which I find myself.  ​It is so wonderful to enter the emotional world of these songs and to express, through my body, what at times words and music alone cannot.​
